YouTube Rentals and Affiliate Marketing

by on March 26, 2010

I got an email from YouTube last Friday that my YouTube partner account was enabled to offer rentals.

This got me brainstorming on new ways to monetize video, which has been hyped as one of the next big things for affiliates for years.

It’s an interesting setup where you can charge rental fees ranging from $0.99 to $19.99 for your video content, and there are a number of duration periods you can set from one day to no end date.

I’ve tried an initial test of the service by putting up videos from Affiliate Summit West 2009, which were previously only available to attendees of the conference.

But just the rental angle isn’t the part I think is the big thing for affiliates. My thought is that you can provide short samples for a low fee for training classes and then have a call to action at the end to get the full version through an affiliate link.

Or maybe the initial $0.99 could be the first in a series of many instructional videos that cost more and are available after a customer purchases access through an affiliate link.
