Q: I was having a conversation with a colleague about being successful in affiliate marketing. He made a statement that took me back a bit. He stated he isn’t interested in marketing at all, he simply wants to be an affiliate marketer… hinting that strong PPC is all that is really needed. So, is there a difference? Are we not marketers first, or is there a clear distinction?

A: It’s sort of silly for him to say he’s not a marketer. Even if he’s strictly doing PPC, it’s PPC marketing.

There are certainly marketing tactics and techniques being used in this work. I think it’s certainly beneficial for you to have a grasp on marketing principles.

It doesn’t really make sense for him to state that he’s not a marketer when he’s engaging in affiliate marketing.

I’d encourage you to read up on marketing trends and ideas and endeavor to learn new things constantly.

Shawn – I agree with you. Mr. PPC needs to broaden his skill set. Relying on one tactic may work today but will likely be the road to long term failure. For example all of the affiliates who only did mortgage leads have been seriously hurting over the past year or so.
I wrote a new presentation at Affiliate Summit called The Ten Hottest Strategies for Affiliate Marketing, it is on Slide Share at http://tinyurl.com/67ybwt and according to a good source (Shawn) it will be on http://www.AffiliateSummit.tv in about 3 weeks.
This is a quik course for Mr. PPC to get the latest strategies :)

Well let's think about this. Marketer is a person and Marketing is an action. Therefore a person who is a marketer promoting a product or service is essentially marketing that product. In vise versa, a person marketing a product or service is in fact a marketer.

If you haven't the right marketer mindset you can't succeed in affiliate marketing.
This mindset means that marketers are passionate, creative, persevering, they behave ethically, they are credible or authentic, attentive to their environment and data from analytics, focus on what they are doing, curious and thirsty about innovation, new concepts, They Know how to share knowledge and build community.
Affiliate Marketing is about having the right marketer mindset and applying performance.

We're all marketers, even though without any ads on our sites – we all want them to be read, thus marketing, then if you take it further by adding ads – nevermind if it's PPC, CPA, Aff or whatnot's doesn't make us different.
