Proposed Toolbar Policy from ShareASale

by on February 17, 2009

ShareASale hosted a toolbar roundtable on February 3, 2009 and they’ve compiled the feedback and ideas into a proposed toolbar policy.

This proposed policy is a living document and there is a thread and poll posted at ABestWeb for anybody who would like to voice their opinion.

Read the proposed toolbar policy.

Why is ShareASale trying to make up a policy?

1) Why don’t they just reference an existing industry standard, such as Truste’s Trusted Download program (http://www.truste.org/trusteddownload.php)?

2) Why not let the toolbar publishers notify the merchants, and let them make the choice? Many already do so quite willing when asked. See uPromise’s TurboSaver as an example.

I applaud Brian and SAS for not only the way they have involved the community in the decision making process, but for having the guts to put out a very specific policy addressing a very controversial issue.

IMHO, this is the exact kind of thing that needs to happen if we are ever to have any significant change in this industry and shed the negative perception that many outside our industry have of affiliate marketing. SAS is showing only one way that the technology can be used in a positive way. Presenting an alternative, when saying something is not ok, is generally more productive.

So I guess this means they want you to market for them…but not really? If you are assisting a customer/client in finding a product that they are looking for what is the big deal if you get paid in assisting them in the search process? I don’t have a toolbar but I think they are helpful and clever.

I understand not allowing all the trickery software bundling stuff…but I guess toolbars have had some type of bad things go on?

blessings,
Wendy
