Not Only Did I Get a BlackBerry Torch, but I Love It

by on August 26, 2010

I checked the other day and saw I was eligible for an upgrade on AT&T from my BlackBerry Bold, so I took a look at the site to see which phones were available.

Of course, they’ve got the iPhone 4 there, and a variety of Android phones with the Dell Aero on the way. Plus, I thought about the Dell Streak as my primary phone (still plan to get it as an extra toy).

But I went with the BlackBerry Torch, a phone I scoffed at when it was released.

I’ve never cared for the iPhone after repeated attempts to like it. I use an iPod Touch for my music, and can’t stand to use it for email when it’s the only handy device. I simply can’t type fast and correct on that keyboard.

In addition to my BlackBerry Bold, I’ve had a Nexus One since January. I really like the size, weight, and functionality of this Android phone, but I’ve got the same keyboard gripes there as I have with the iPhone.

I type a lot on my phone – I’m talking multiple paragraph emails regularly. And the only phone that I’ve really been productive with over the years has been the BlackBerry.

So, I ordered the BlackBerry Torch and had low expectations. But you know what? I am crazy about this device.

It’s got all of the fun features of the various touch-screen phones, and the option to type on the screen, but then I get to slide out my tactile keyboard.

I’m not going to list out the specs and all that nonsense you can read at 50 different tech blogs. Instead, I’ll show you how it looks next to my Nexus One and BlackBerry Bold with the keyboard in and out.

The BlackBerry Torch does what I need my phone to do – it makes it easy for me to work on the go, plus it has the easy experience for social networks and media.

It’s a phone mullet with the BlackBerry in the front and the touch-screen in the back, and it’s my new addicition.

Haters gonna hate.

Looked at the great iPhone, but declined: Not a big “gamer.” Don’t need all those (fun)apps. Heavy typing-need a physical keyboard (Once you go Blackberry, you can’t go back!). Need a business, grown up smartphone!

My BB experience has been flawless. Previous awesome devices 8100/8310/9000, now the 9800 Torch. Simply does what I need. I use the smartphone for work and life. BBM with my cohorts/friends-unbeatable! With the help of the educational BB forums, websites (like this one!), etc., I’ve managed to stay current with the OS and continue to thrive! Long live Blackberry!

Yeah, between the active and retired ones I have, my wife has and my oldest daughter, I think we could give Missy a run for her money.

I’m starting to think you might have more phones than Missy has shoes :)

My sites are all in WordPress these days and I’ve got a plugin to make them easily viewable by smartphones already. :)

Agreed – the social feeds make all of that way more easy to follow. A nice feature I didn’t realize I was getting.

I bet you could find a nice parachute pants case. I prefer one with the two-tone jeans look.

If you like it , You are going to mobilize all your websites and lose many ad spaces, I think thats’s what is goin to happen, If this technology globally spread. What do think Shawn ?

I’ve had mine for a couple weeks and I love it. I can get a full day out of it while using email, Twitter, and Facebook. The social feeds app has made keeping up with Twitter and Facebook a breeze and that’s something I could never get into using my phone. By far the best phone I’ve ever owned.

Love the comment that it’s a mullet. As a child of the ’80s I totally miss the mullet LOL :-) To know I can have a phone with similar qualities … well… does life get any sweeter than that? :D Now if we could just find a phone with pockets like parachute pants we’d be golden! :) hahaha

I’ve only had it for one full day, but I was happy with the battery life – it seemed on par with the Bold, which always lasts a full day for me.

I think I saw somewhere that it’s good for a day and a half of average use, but I am pounding on email, Twitter, Facebook, foursquare, etc. pretty often.

The battery for the Nexus One has made it virtually useless to me – with my usage, it’s dead in 5-6 hours.

I might have to pick this up, I’ve had the bold forever and the battery life is starting to get to me. How’s the battery on the torch?
