We’ve received a lot of feedback in the past that the Q&A at the end of sessions was problematic on a number of levels.
Some people would be inaudible, because they didn’t ask a question with a mic; while others would preface their question with a commercial for their company.
So, we decided it was time for a change, and we’re going to have questions submitted to the speakers via SMS this time around.
The questions submitted via text message will be standard rate text messages, so they may be free for you, or up to twenty cents on some carriers if you do not have a text messaging plan.
Also, this service is serious about privacy. We cannot see your phone numbers, and you’ll never receive follow-up text messages outside this presentation.
It’s easy to ask a question in any session. You’ll simply text a keyword (provided in each session) a space and then your question to 22333.
Capitalization doesn’t matter, but spaces and spelling do.
You can see an example below that I set up for my First Timers Guide for Affiliate Summit session, taking place in the Gramercy Suite from 10:00am-11:00am on Sunday, August 15.
Text ASE10FIRST and your message to 22333 to see your question added to the list.
Also, there will be an option to submit questions via Twitter and online.

Lesley and Gobala – there will be an option to submit questions via Twitter and online, too. I highlighted the SMS option, since I figured more people would have phones than computers.
Smartphones will be able to use the online version, and we’ll have WiFi in the rooms.

There can always be multiple questions and follow-ups submitted. All too often, I hear the multi-part or complex questions, and speakers are not able to adequately address them, because the person asking meanders when trying to get to the point.
We were hoping this would help with folks being forced to be succinct.

I think it will accomplish the opposite – the questions will be anonymous, so there will be less apprehension.
Yeah I’m from outside the US, looks like I will have to get a prepaid US mobile service..
Shawn – I can understand why you’re doing this, but I have a couple of concerns:
- it can be difficult to get your message across properly in a short SMS, could result in misunderstandings
- it may make the whole experience a lot less interactive and less interesting
- and (from a purely selfish standpoint) anyone attending from outside the US may not have a US cell phone and may be unable to text
I think this is a great idea, for the summit, you can get your point across effectively, as a online trading consultant I find that when I hold conferences I have trouble hearing some of the audience so I may intergrate this method into my meetings.
