Marketing the Death of Michael Jackson

by on June 26, 2009

There are three groups of people that have emerged since the announcement of the death of Michael Jackson yesterday: devastated fans, haters, and marketers.

Michael Jackson's ThrillerWell, if we drew up a Venn diagram, most marketers probably also belong to one of the first two camps, too.

Anyhow, it didn’t take long for fans to express their despair with credit cards by purchasing his songs and albums. A look at the Amazon Bestsellers in Music reveals that Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five own the top 20 spots (5pm ET on 6-26-09), with the exception of Regina Spektor at 16 and Wilco at 18.

This sort of commerce domination is playing out at countless retailers – it’s a perfect storm for affiliate marketers that are quick to mobilize campaigns.

Michael Jackson on Amazon

In addition to dominating Amazon, there are approximately 30,000 auctions for Michael Jackson on eBay, and domination of the Top Songs and Top Albums by Michael Jackson on iTunes.

Lots of affiliate marketers are talking about the Gloved One on ABestWeb and WickedFire. Stop talking on forums and watching TV coverage.

Get moving on those campaigns. This is going to be a strong weekend for Michael Jackson retail sales.

@PPC is me:
I heard yesterday that he’s sold a half million records since he died, so I think there is plenty of strength left in MJ campaigns.

Also, there will be insane coverage of his memorial service today, so I’d imagine there will be another surge in buying.

Hi Shawn,

I also wrote a post on the exact same thing. Do you mind telling me what you think: http://www.ppcisme.com/michael-jackson-and-ppc

Thanks,

@Marc:
I agree about those news organizations – I’m entirely sick of seeing wall to wall coverage of Michael Jackson on TV stations and in my newspapers.

What’s up with all the sick parasites looking to make a buck off the death of Michael Jackson? Obviously some people will try, but I don’t care to read what they have to say and would not associate with them.

I haven’t see any email submits, which is too bad since that would allow the international community to participate.

There are zip submits, though, and some CPA networks offer redirects for international traffic.

@Peter Koning:
I saw people joking that there would be email submits, but didn’t bother to look if they emerged.

Yeah, I guess we are maybe a sub-category, since there aren’t that many of us.

I just wish the coverage would include that creepy song “Ben” from the old days.

Hey Shawn – yep I blogged a bit about this last week (see link below) when I saw the first “MJ Email Submit Offer” come in the inbox. That offer lived a few days and has now been pulled from the advertiser.

Not sure why – maybe they ran out of music albums or other reasons it didn’t “back out”. The offer was paying $1.30 per email submitted.

I think we’re both in the unmentioned fourth category – marketers who blog about this stuff :)

Michael Jackson CPA offer RIP Blog post is here.

Cheers.

@Free Acai Berry Trials:
So, by Twitter marketing, are you saying you’re spamming Twitter with keywords related to Michael Jackson and affiliate links?

I started doing some twitter marketing on Michael Jackson last night. From what you have written, the returns should start coming in rather quickly.
