Losing Weight with Gmail

by on March 3, 2009

The affiliate fatblogging efforts are in full effect with a loss for the third week in a row, albeit just a single pound. Beats hitting a plateau, so it’s cool with me.

One thing I did last week, which I probably haven’t done since high school back in the 80′s, was to exercise five days in a row.

This week is a little tricky, since I went to the Late Show with David Letterman yesterday, and have a conference tomorrow, so I’m basically tied up for two days this week.

But it’s definitely a help to have this gym I recently joined, because they have all sorts of indoor options – basketball, squash, swimming, etc.

I am planning to give squash a try, so anybody who knows what’s what with squash rackets, feel free to post a comment with an affiliate link, because I need to buy one.

Also, I just switched over to using Gmail after working in Outlook since the 90′s. You might be thinking that Gmail has nothing to do with getting more healthy, but I have an angle for you.

I’ve got Gmail and Remember the Milk (for tasks) on both my Blackberry and iPod Touch, so I am able to be more efficient when working out.

In the past, I had my email POP accounts pulled into my Blackberry, but when I’d go for a walk, all of the activity on the Blackberry was duplicated in Outlook. When I returned home, I’d have to file away the sent messages and those emails I’d already deleted or handled while I was out.

But with Gmail and Remember the Milk, I’m always in sync with my desktop when i do stuff on my Blackberry or iPod Touch.

I suppose I could have done something similar in the past with IMAP, but I didn’t. Anyhow, it saves some time to be able to maintain a live version of email, tasks and calendar when I’m out (I used to have to sync up the Blackberry to my PC).

Long story short – Gmail is helping me lose weight.

Starting weight: 225
Last week: 221
This week: 220

Your Message@Wendy Merritt:
Thanks – be sure to play with the Blackberry Storm before buying – I tested one out and found it hard to get used to how hard you had to press the keys, compared to an iPhone.

I love my Blackberry Bold.

Congratulations on the weight loss! Losing weight is very hard to do and keep it off…I’m proud of you! :-)

I’m going to have to check into the gmail thing. I have an account but don’t really ever use it. I am looking at getting a Blackberry storm so that could be an important time saver for me.

Thanks for sharing your intelligence with us!

Cool – thanks for the advice Shawn. I think I’ll make the switch soon :)

Hey Fraser -

Yes, I have the Google Apps version. I actually set up my email on it last summer, but had been still using Outlook since then with POP accounts.

If you have a concern about not being able to access your email if you’re not connected to the Internet, there is an offline option now to sync your email for times you don’t have a connection.

I’ve got that sync’d on three different computers to have redundancy.

It had been a little clumsy to adapt to the different way of working with email, but I love the flexibility of not being tethered to one computer.

Great for traveling, or even if you need to jump on from a friend’s house.

Hey Shawn :)

I’m considering the gmail switch as well after reading your blog recently and listening to the geekcast. Did you go for the paid google apps options and point your MX records direct at google or are you just using a standard gmail account?
