It's Not All About the Benjamins

by on April 23, 2007

The culture of Internet marketing is sometimes warped. When reading some message boards and blogs, I get the impression that too much is never enough for many.

I was reminded of this ethos recently when I declined an opportunity to speak at a conference, because I have plans for a family vacation at the same time.

The response I got from the organizer…

Vacation, or great money making opportunities, hmmm… which would I switch? The show is 120 days away… can’t change your vacation plans?

I reiterated my “no thanks.”

I’ve got to admit that I have been guilty in the past of focusing too much on work. I still do sometimes. But in the grand scheme, I’m working on a paradigm shift to work smarter, not harder.

Affiliate marketing allows for a flexible lifestyle. Certainly, there are lots of “great money making opportunities,” but I’d prefer to focus on the great life opportunities it affords.

You are right…its not all about the benjamins, and you must balance work and play. However they were not asking you to skip your vacation they were just asking if it was possible for you to adjust your plans. If you had already promised your family that was the week and it would be too troublesome then yes it may be too much to as.
However, I think it was an appropriate counter-solution.

The good news is you must have been pretty high on their speaker choice list!

Wow, what an ass to say that. That would certainly be the end of my dealings with them.

I’m pretty proud of the work I’ve done over the past 8 years in the industry, but I’m most proud of the work I’ve done to balance my personal and professional lives.

I agree completely. It reaches a point where you have to say enough work is enough and focus on family. No one ever dies and says boy i wished i had worked more usually it is i wish i had traveled somewhere or wish had spent more time with family.
