Is Microsoft Buying Performics?

There was a report from Reuters today that DoubleClick is exploring a sale and they are in talks with Microsoft (MSFT), and other potential buyers.

Being that Performics is a division of DoubleClick, the company could potentially be a Bill Gates property in the future.

If this were to happen, it could have a significant impact on the affiliate marketing landscape. Imagine if every new and updated version of Internet Explorer had merchants from Performics bookmarked?

Many different ways Performics could be grown under the TLC of MSFT. And this would put Microsoft in the middle of affiliate marketing in a big way. Something I’ve been waiting on for a decade.

Hum… Considering the ton of anti fair business practices lawsuits that Microsoft got into (and continue to get into – EU) I doubt very much they would try that approach on IE. However, this maybe a good complement to the infamous MSN search and trying to get an Adsense like network going with a very nice slate of advertisers not only from Performics but their parent co. In my view there are many ways Microsoft could benefit from this and certainly give Yahoo serious trouble and keep up with Google (forget catching up).

    My two cents

How would the company behind the browser benefit from having Performics merchants bookmarked unless they were affiliate links?

It would be a great perk to tout to potential advertisers, as it would give those advertisers more penetration with consumers.

How about this… Microsoft just registered MicrosoftAffiliateNetwork.org.

Oddly, it looks like the .com is still available.

Just found some more domains, including that .com:

    microsoftaffiliatenetwork.com
    microsoftaffiliatenetwork.net
    microsoftaffiliates.com
    microsoftaffiliates.net
    microsoftaffiliates.org

My curiousity is most certainly piqued and I’m anxious to see what happens here.

    Wow. Great find, Shawn.

Knowing MS, I’m suprised they didn’t brand it as AffiliatesLive.com!
