Shawn,

Don't get me wrong, I had a dell laptop for about 10 years straight with upgrades every year or so. I think until about 4-5 years ago they were one of the best in value and quality, but in recent years HP, Sony, and Thinkpad produce nicer equipment so they are maybe just the cheapest. Our CTO continues to buy them for employees (he has a thinkpad) and buys their servers over my objections, but that is just a cost savings measure.

As for the Mac, I went Mac about 8-9 months ago for 2 reasons. The 17 in MacBook Pro has the best screen and resolution while still being very portable and light of any notebook out there and I shopped around. Also, when I open it up it turns on immediately. Something a windows machine could never do for me after about 3 weeks of use. Besides that with the new Mac Office, its good all the advantages of a windows machine.

Hey Jim -

I got a Ford Escort out of college and after 12 years, it wouldn't die, so I finally gave it away. But that's another story.

Anyhow, I've tried other brands and I love my Dells.

I've continually upgraded to get stronger machines over the years - never had one die on me.

I got a Mac last year and never really got why people love them so much.

It's nice looking, but beyond that I don't get the allure.

I hear all the time that they never crash - iMovie crashes for me constantly.

Dell's are like the Ford's of the computer industry. Yeah, maybe its the best Dell you can buy but, its still a Dell. Used Dell's form any years but the quality of the product has gotten so poor. Now that I have gone from Dell to Sony to now a Mac. When I type on the cheap dells we buy people in the office they feel exactly that -- cheap.

Hi Dan -

Mobile broadband is significant to me, but also that it's relatively light (~ 5 lbs - that's fine to me), fast, and a display that's workable for me to access my home desktop, as well as edit video.

I don't think that the single reason why you should like a laptop is it's mobile broadband. There are other far more important aspects to be seen.
I agree that an important thing for a laptop are the connectivity features but the autonomy, the cpu speed, how large is the display are some key features, also.
