How to Make Affiliate Sales

by on June 9, 2009

Q: If you joined an affiliate program and the product was digital with a price range around $20, how would you make four sales in your first month if you had a strong desire to succeed, no money (or very little), no Web site, no mailing list, and not much experience?

A: The first thing I would do would be to get a piece of paper, and I would make a “to do” list. The first item on the list would be to create a Web site.

So anyway, I don’t know how you would plan to promote affiliate links if you have no assets where you could promote them. Since you don’t have money to put into it, PPC is off the table.

I would suggest that you create a new blog around the topic of this affiliate program that you wish to promote.

There are services where you can start up a blog for free, but I would suggest getting your own hosting (~ $10/month) and domain ($10/year). And then install WordPress, which is free, to manage the site.

Then you should start creating content around the topic of the site. Don’t worry about the look of the blog – just start churning out content. Understand that nobody is going to be visiting or buying from you initially, so you’re operating in something of a vacuum.

This is the period where you can either persevere or quit. You probably won’t make four sales in the first month, unless you’re really aggressive in marketing the site.

Note: aggressive doesn’t equal spam, but rather hard work.

Later on, get a nice looking WordPress theme, and add in plugins to customize the site more.

Focus on building a quality site and eventually the sales will come.

Hello,
What would you suggest would be the first step for me to begin to attract an Affiliate Sales Force for my service?  We started a company in late April of this year called Nurture My Clients and have grown through word of mouth so far.  However I would like to get this rolling all over the US and would like to be able to advertise my Affiliate opportunity.  Any suggestions?  Thanks for your time!

One of the things I’ve learned when it comes to making affiliate sales is relating to my viewers, it’s about understanding what emotions they are feeling and reinforcing them. Then it’s about relating to them as a real person. Just spouting facts, benefits and features won’t get their attention. You must relate to them on a very personal level and show them as best you can that you are genuine. Also the more approachable you are the better.

I am in the same boat, I just started my blog on June 1st and it is hard to write something every day when no one is reading it but like Shawn said, you need to stick with it and just keep posting. Sooner or later the search engines will pick it up and you’ll start to get hits to your site. May take a few moths, but they will come.

@Reverse Cell Phone Lookup:
Definitely more that can be done – just trying to give a quick and actionable answer.

Very good summary of the first steps to take in your Affiliate Marketing endeavor. It’s somewhat sobering to hear a real affiliate marketer say that it’s not a quick path to riches.

But it can be done. Patience and perseverance coupled with creativity and a willingness to try different things.

I like your help on this question. There are some promotional steps and some writing details that could be added but it’s a safe answer that could get some sales.

Definitely great advice. Get a domain name / hosting, install WordPress on it and start writing regularly content that is very relevant to what you are trying to sell. Join social media sites Twitter and StumbleUpon and start connecting to the people in your target group and slowly, but surely your traffic will grow and sales will start coming.
