There is a lot of blog buzz for the beta launch of the Google pay-per-action beta test affiliate program.

The fuss is about Google entering into affiliate marketing with this pay-per-action opportunity for affiliates and merchants, but in my opinion, Google AdSense is an affiliate program.

We can debate the nuances all over the place, but to me AdSense is a ppc affiliate program.

Anyhow, merchants can learn more about the pay-per-action test via Google AdWords and then sign-up at http://services.google.com/payperaction/.

Affiliates can apply for an AdSense Referrals Beta invite if they have a valid AdSense Publisher ID. The affiliates will be invited on a rolling basis over the coming weeks.

I’ve got to wonder if the CPA networks are sweating it out about this one.

What impact do you belive this “pay-per_action” model will have on current pay-per-click affiliates?

Advertisers may be able disintermediate (cut out the middle man aka affiliate) with this new program.

Google has all the data it needs to jump into affiliate marketing since most affiliates and merchants give them real-time data using the “free” Google Analytics tools. Basically with Google Checkout, Google completed the circle from search through affiliate through merchant checkout. They’ve got the data and can easily connect the dots. (They even know which web properties perform well due to Google AdSense.)

Now what will they do with it? Maximize shareholder value is my guess — by eventually entering the affiliate space. Interestingly, Steven Messer, co-founder of LinkShare, warned of this very thing at Affiliate Summit 2005.

I think it will vary for different verticals, depending on which ad option provides a better EPC.

I don’t know what the breakout is, but my impression is the AdSense, powered by affiliates, accounts for a very significant portion of Google’s ad inventory.

Well finally the AdSense people will be called affiliates as they should be called.

Google defenetily can be ahead of the game having all AdSense publishers lined up. But CPA involves more than just placing a javascript on your website. It will be intreseting to see what comes of it.

I think many affiliate marketers are missing this:

Can I use search engine marketing to promote my referrals campaign?
You may not use search engine marketing to purchase traffic for the specific and sole purpose of generating conversions, unless you have the express permission of the advertiser.

According to wikipedia (Bear in mind google ranks the page as number one for “search engine marketing” and the define: query) SEO is PART of SEM.

Am I the only one worried about this?

    Thanks for sharing Shawn,

I was not even aware of the beta… I’m going to look into it further.

    Cheers,

Well, I’ve just signed us up and I’m hoping to get a quick ROI test in with some decent volume as we exit the tax season. ROI for CPA continues to easily outperform all other methods while paid search ROI has been lacklustre again this season. Hopefully I’ll have something useful to report soon, but G said that it could take awhile before I get accepted into Beta.
