Good Host for New Bloggers

by on March 30, 2009

Q: Why do you recommend 1&1 and WordPress for newbies? I am a newbie and the installation for WordPress is too technical for me. And I’ve learned since that there are some hosts that have 1-click installation for WordPress, saving time and money, even if the monthly cost is higher. So, why do you recommend 1&1 for newbies when their system does not support WordPress installation?

A: There are a couple reasons why I suggested 1&1 to newbies. They offer a variety of hosting packages and are attractively priced.

Also, I like their interface a lot. CPanel is a popular user interface on many hosts, but I actually prefer the 1&1 admin area for intuitiveness.

And with regards to not supporting 1-click installation, they actually have a blogging tool in their interface that is powered by WordPress. It’s called “1&1 Blog” under “Website Applications.”

Plus, you can install WordPress if you or a friend knows how to do it. It’s just not available in 1-click.

Alternately, another host to consider is LivingDot. I’ve used them for a number of blogs. They will install WordPress for you and make updates at no extra cost upon request.

Anyhow, the “1&1 Blog” option is a streamlined version of a full WordPress install. That won’t work for more advanced users, but I think it’s very sufficient for newbies.

I would not recommend 1and1 to my worst enemy. In my opinion they are theives and thugs.Check out why the Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau has given 1and1 their lowest rating “F.”

The complaints filed against a company may not be as important as the type of complaints, and how the company has handled them. The reason I never compared payouts in this case is that I am only recommending things I use.

I’ve currently got a 1&1 Managed Server III account, as well as a 1&1 Developer Package.

I tested out the 1&1 Blog tool and I think it makes sense to people that ask questions (and I get this often at askshawncollins.com) like “how do I put an affiliate link on my site?”.

And installing WordPress isn’t simple to all – there are plenty of people who are intimidated by any sort of software install.

Your Message@gusto:
I haven’t compared the payouts on hosting affiliate programs – the question was based on hosting companies I list on my “Affiliate Newbies” page, and I list 1&1 and RackSpace, because those are the two places where I currently have servers.

Personally, I don’t like shared hosting anywhere, but it’s the way to go for people with limited cash, and I think it does matter to have an easy to use interface, as I mentioned for 1&1.

the truth is that 1 &1 have a very high paying affiliate program and people who are new to online marketing often buy more than they need anyhow.. so with a suggestion of 1&! shawn i very likely to land $80+ per conversion rather that the $50 + he would get from say hostgator.

That’s cool.. we’re all here to make money but a bullshit answer about streamlined interfaces isn’t going actually help anyone.Wordpress isn’t that complicated of a system and the install is 5 min if you do it manually.

I still like Bluehost – they have simple scripts install and 24/7 support if you’re a newbie and need them to walk you through it.

I have dealt with 1and1 before and was very disappointed. 1and1 sucks when it comes to domains and there hosting isn’t that good. I probably was one of there unlucky customers.

Wordpress installation shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes, even for “non-technical” users. If you can read and follow simple English instructions, you can do it. Harden up!
