Getting a Blog Indexed in Google

by on August 18, 2008

Q: What is the procedure to get your blog indexed in search? If I want to ensure that my blog will be indexed in search, besides using good content over a long period, what other steps should I take so Google can find it? In Yahoo, there is a site feed area that is for the blog, but Google doesn’t seem to have one. I am not sure about MSN – can you give me some specific advice?

A: I have a good track record for having my blogs indexed pretty quick with Google and other search engines.

One thing I always do, and I don’t know that there is a direct benefit with the search engines, is to claim my blogs at Technorati.

Also, I’ll go to Google Reader and subscribe to my RSS feed. I do this, so I can see how my blogs are displayed there, since my stats reveal that many subscribers access me through Google Reader, but presumably this also gets my feed into the Google system.

I also run my RSS feeds through FeedBurner, which is owned by Google. Another potential reason why my blogs get indexed.

I can’t say whether these actions are mutually exclusive from getting indexed, but I’m taking these steps, and I’m getting indexed.

K1Visa,

I'm not sure if I follow you…
Did you set up a sitemap with Google & submit it at their webmaster tools?

I was fortunate enough to get my blog indexed in 5 days.
I set up a sitemap and that was all that was needed.

Hi Shawn,

I'd like to add a couple of items if I could.

Simply making a couple of posts will get you indexed if you use WP since it auto-pings several different blog directories for you.

You may also want to submit each post URL to social news sites like Digg, NewsVine, and/or Propeller. That'll shonuff get you indexed in no time.

I'd also like to mention that indexing alone won't get you any real traffic for a couple months or longer even if you stay active and consistent (unless you blog about specific news items that people are searching for).

So the reader may want to rely more on social networking and social news sites in the mean time. Social networking sites will send you decent direct traffic if you network within your niche, while search engine traffic will find you easier via social news sites since they already rank well.

All of this without spamming of course – cause that's just not cool.

Hi James -

Are you saying this will get somebody indexed in Google or just in Feedage?

One other way I have found to get those valuable back links is to choose a relevant forum and start posting. Most of the time if the forum moderators see that you are adding value eg: helping others on the forum, they won't mind a small non obtrusive link back to your site.

Hi Shawn,

If you go along to http://www.Feedage.com and submit your RSS feed you will be indexed instantly.
