Facebook Flyers – the Next Google AdWords?
Thanks for visiting the Affiliate Tip blog. Subscribe to my RSS feed or enter your e-mail on the top left to get updates by e-mail.
I see frequent press releases from companies claiming to have the latest challenger to Google AdWords. That’s usually the last I hear of these solutions.
But along comes Facebook Flyers, and I think this is something that affiliate marketers need to test out.
So far, the only thing I’ve been hearing about Facebook Flyers has been how some affiliates are gaming it with schemes where they open numerous Facebook accounts.
But there are interesting opportunities here for legitimate marketers to purchase ads through their own Facebook accounts.
If you’re not familiar with Facebook Flyers, there are two different advertising options. Flyers Basic enables you to run ads on a $2 CPM with targeting based on age, gender, and network.
Then there is Flyers Pro where you can pay per click with a minimum of $0.01 per click. As with other PPC ad buys, a higher max price per click increases the chance your ad will be shown.
Facebook will auto-price your bids up to your max price depending on the current demand for audience you are targeting by other Flyers advertisers.
You can set a maximum budget with Flyers Pro and set ads to run certain days or continuously. The Flyers ad can point internally to a group or event on Facebook, or else you can advertise an external URL.
The ads themselves look more like BlogAds than AdWords, and I think that’s a good thing. You are able to include an image and up to 200 characters of text.
I am testing out the Basic and Pro versions, as well as promoting an Event on Facebook, and an external URL. I’d urge you to start up some testing, too.

Was trying to keep this under wraps not blog it, but Shawn and Jim already spilled the beans. Facebook is up in arms and it’s harder to advertise now due to the black hatters catching wind of it. See example of my Facebook Flyer here.

Hi Shawn, I found out about Flyers awhile back and just started testing yesterday.
I didn’t blog about it however, because a bunch of blackhat affiliates already have tried to ruin it for everyone, so I didn’t really want to spread the word and have more people try to game the system. Facebook has been doing a big crackdown as it is and they’re gunning for spammers or anyone using affiliate links.
But like you said, for legit marketing it could be pretty good. I’m just using it for a straight ad to the 5 Star blog and I’m using Flyers Pro PPC.
So far the 1st day I’ve gotten 1,986 impressions – 0 clicks!
So I’m highly underwhelmed. However the targeting options aren’t very tight and I bid pretty low. So we’ll see.
For more consumer oriented products, or ads that are more youth and entertainment oriented, it could work well.
reply to this commentFacebook Doesn’t want your money. FB hates affiliate marketers.
The CPM flyers get really crappy CTRs – The PPC flyers are GREAT! except they will delete the one that make you money. They want you to sell your used car or advertise next weekends kegger at the frat house, not affiliate ads for dating, ringtones, email subs, free trial products and the like.
Plus the $50 a day budget limit is pretty limiting.
It is possible to squeeze a bit out of the system, but you need to be smart about it.
reply to this commentMy only issue with it is that the ads that I have been seeing when I am logged in tend to lean towards the dating and bimbo’s looking to “cam”
I kind of enjoyed being free of this garbage when I bailed on MySpace and was hoping Facebook was above it.
reply to this commentLooks like it worth some testing.
reply to this commentLinda, do you mean Facebook won’t allow anyone to use Affiliate links as the destination URL for the flyers?
