I’ve been hearing good things about Microsoft Windows 7, and I figured I’d upgrade my main machine, which I purchased last year with Vista as the OS.

Microsoft Windows 7I never had any major problems with Vista, but there were quirks here and there with Flash, PDFs, and other things that I came to accept. These issues, combined with touts of new features in Windows 7 like HomeGroup, Jump Lists, Snap, Windows Search, and the Windows Tashbar, got me intrigued enough to try the upgrade.

Back when Vista came out, I bought the upgrade to move from XP, and it was a hassle. At the time, I was so displeased with software incompatibilities and other issues that I wanted to uninstall Vista. Only I couldn’t – I was trapped. So, I ended up reformatting the hard drive to go back to XP.

Anyhow, I conveniently forgot this memory and went to Amazon.com to pick up the Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade. And I hit a snag right off. I didn’t think about the version of Vista I had when buying Windows 7 – turned out I had Vista Home Premium and purchased the Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade.

Since I had different levels of the OS, I was not able to initiate a regular upgrade. My only option with Professional was to make a clean install. I went from seeing this as a hassle to a treat – I welcomed the chance to speed up my machine, even though it meant reinstalling a bunch of stuff.

The installation of Microsoft Windows 7 was very easy, and even more seamless than expected. I had backed up all of my files to an external hard drive, but after completing the install, I found that there was a folder called Windows.old with all of my files – fantastic.

I am sure that was in the documentation, but I just popped the disc in and got started.

I’ve just been on it one day, but I’m really happy so far – my computer is running faster and I’m enjoying the features.
