California Affiliates – Join the Fight Against Bad Legislation

Posted by Shawn Collins on March 25th, 2009 | 0 Comments

The Performance Marketing Alliance is leading a grass-roots campaign to fight California Assembly Bill 178.

If you’re not familiar with it, California Assembly Bill 178 threatens to alter the affiliate marketing industry and put affiliates and agencies in California at risk.

This bill categorizes affiliates as a sales presence for out-of-state advertisers, therefore giving those companies a tax nexus in California, so that taxes will be levied on these out-of-state advertisers.

As we saw with the same sort of legislation in New York, many affiliate programs removed New York affiliates from their programs to avoid the tax implications.

Let’s not risk a repeat – there are some easy steps California affiliates can take to fight this tax effort.

Check out the Campaign to Fight California Assembly Bill 178 post for details on taking action.

And if you don’t live in California, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. Many states are working on similar legislation. Brian Littleton, CEO and Founder of ShareASale, shares how you can help fight affiliate tax laws in your state.
