This week I decided to incorporate some more types of exercise into my routine. I went running for the first time since 1994 or so.
This run revealed to me that I have horrible stamina and I’m very out of shape. Granted, it was late in the day and very hot, I didn’t stretch (stupid!), and I wasn’t well hydrated.
So, I was dying with cramps after like a half mile. I need to work up to a 5k and later a 10k this year.
If anybody has some advice on running shoes, I’d love to hear a recommendation (with an affiliate link, of course). I’m at the end of the life of my current pair, and need to get new ones now.
I remain at 219, much to my dismay. This extended plateau isn’t working for me. It’s time for extremes, and you know what that means… no more beer for a while.
I am thinking/hoping that is the problem, and will see if I can move the needle in the coming weeks.
Starting weight: 225
Last week: 219
This week: 219

@Donald:
I would think any quality running shoes wouldn’t need any sort of inserts, unless you usually need them?
P.S. good luck with the dry spell on beer…
Since 1994? I actually hear what you are saying, its been awhile for myself too, But really though I have no suggestions on what running shoes to wear, my thoughts are simple; it has to fit, it has to be comfortable, and it has to come with a pair of Dr Scholes!
@Christoph:
That’s wild that you suggest the Nike Air Pegasus 25 – I just made a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9FrBhOo6Lo) late last night where I talked about going to a store and they recommended them.
So those are my new running shoes now.
Nike Air Pegasus 25
I started running last year in April and are averaging 5-6 miles per day for 5-6 days per week. The Nike Air Pegasus 25 is a great running shoe and fairly low priced. The last time I got it for $75 at Sports Authority. I run treadmill and asphalt and very little cross country – this show can handle it all.
Don’t go cheap on your shoes. $50/sneakers don’t last and your feet will suffer.
In regards to your stalled weight loss – you need to do cross training. Run Monday, Wednesday, Friday and do different exercise on Tuesday and Thursday. Go easy on Saturday and Sunday – eventually just go and walk for an hour. Add some light weight training – not too much as otherwise you will bulk up.
For running – setup a post run meal within 30-60 minutes after running. This small meal should have about 20 gr of protein. Start drinking 3-5 cups of green tea per day – it will help to increase your metabolism and therefore burn more calories.
@Rich Robertson:
Thanks – I keep hearing this is the way to go, so I’ll have to break my habit of buying them online.
I feel your pain. I, too, and stuck at 219! As for running shoes, depending on where you live, the very best thing to do is find a running store and go in and let them reccomend the right shoe for your foot type. They will put you on a treadmill and see how your feet land and they’ll assess your arches and general foot composition. Depending on whether you have high arches or flat feet, walk on the insoles or outsides of your feet, there’s a specific shoe for your type. I did this and it made all the difference in the world. There’s nothing to compare to running in a new pair of running shoes that are just exactly right.
Yeah…. Ummm… maybe in your case. lol I don’t drink beer hardly ever.
@Wendy Shepherd:
Beer muscles.
All that exercise is gaining you muscle… that’s why you have a plateau.
Same thing happens to me now and then.
@Jim Kukral:
The beer-free diet is a purely temporary measure to try and jump start things.
I need to find an answer, since I’m exercising and eating mostly healthy and stuck at the same weight for a while.
I’m going all in in July. I joined this workout program. Watch the video. I’m scared you know what-less. http://www.crossfitcleveland.com. I go MWF.
Maybe there’s a Crossfit near you? You can’t give up beer!
