buy.at has assembled updates on advertising tax legislation in the various states, as well as some resources, for their affiliates.
Here is the material going out in their newsletter…
Several states have already introduced “Advertising Tax” bills and we NEED YOUR HELP to defeat them. Last week in Richmond, the Hearing room was lined with local retailers claiming that Affiliate Advertisers were putting them out of businesses. Without Affiliate Advertisers there to stand up for their rights, the Advertising Tax passed out of Committee. See the Washington Post story.
Below is a list of the bills we are now facing. If you operate in any of these states, please get involved.
Active Bills:
- Colorado HB 1193
- Mississippi SB 2927
- New Mexico HB 50
- Maryland SB 824
- Virginia SB 660
- Vermont HB 661
- Illinois SB 3353
In addition we expect legislation in Oklahoma, Nevada and California.
Rhode Island HB 7071 seeks to repeal the Advertising Tax that passed last year – please support this measure.

I’d say the best thing to do is to be in touch with your politicians and to educate them on the issue and how it would negatively impact you.
I wonder if this will spill over into Europe
Clearly the UK and most of Europe seem to follow.
Should it be stopped? Can it be stopped? How can it be stopped?

buy.at is no longer owned by AOL – they were acquired by Digital Window in the UK about two months ago.

I would suggest reaching out to them in their forum at http://www.abestweb.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=420 – they are very easy to reach there with any questions.

goodluck!
We just conducted a successful campaign against this tax in Colorado. We’re happy to help share our experience with those in other states. Perhaps what was effective for us will help you in your fight!
We also have some ideas on pre-emptive tactics so you can be ready if/when it comes up in your state.
