Affiliate networks and merchants often speak in terms of total affiliates in a given network or affiliate program, but that’s immaterial.

The number of active affiliates is the important metric.

Active affiliates

As you can see from the results in the latest AffStat report, the majority of affiliates in a given affiliate program are inactive.

It’s often said that affiliate programs operate on the 80/20 rule or “Pareto Principle,” where 80% of transactions in an affiliate program are produced by 20% of affiliates.

In speaking with affiliate managers over the years, I’ve often heard affiliate managers say that their affiliate programs are more like 98/2, and I’ve seen that myself in affiliate programs when I’ve taken over the management.

It doesn’t have to be that way - affiliate managers, it doesn’t stop at recruiting. After that, you’ve got to activate and educate, too.
